If you track human behavior through history, all the way back to the earliest of us, we have been a close-knit, affectionate, loving species. Touch is an integral part of that. A hug from a parent or child, a handshake greeting, "eskimo kisses," the touching of foreheads, a clap on a shoulder, holding hands, fist bumps, and kissing are just some of the ways we have shared warm feelings around the world.
What a strange place we live in. In the past 20 years, touching has become more and more frowned upon, but our need for it is greater than ever before. A hug between friends can say more than hours of conversation. Hugs between strangers can say "I don't know you, but I find you valid." Hugs between family members can Express joy, sadness, comfort, understanding, and more.
So what can you do? Be a rebel. Spread your arms and spread the love. Hug your friends. Hug your neighbors. Hug your family. Hug your coworkers. Hug strangers. Put that offer of unconditional love and support for other human beings trying to navigate this world out there for any takers. Go through life armed with a hug.
